Azyren is the spirit of death in Mari mythology, the envoy of the lord Kiyamat.

Not everyone sees this spirit of death; most likely, only sinful or evil people can see it. It appears rarely to the righteous, sometimes it only appears when the soul of a person is separated from the physical body. According to the stories, he appears in different images: sometimes he is in the form of a dead man, sometimes in the form of a man riding black horses with a black wagon. In other myths, like the angel of death in Muslim religion, this angel of death like a big strong man with a dagger, which he cut the throat of a dying man.

The Marians put a bowl of water and a towel in front of the dying man, so that the angel of death could rinse his knife. The soul that has left the body must be cleansed in the same place.
